Jewelry Care
All our jewelry is made for you to wear every day and enjoy them to the fullest!
And because we want them to stay with you forever, here are some tips to keep them beautiful and shiny.
The first thing you need to know...
Silver belongs to the family of precious metals. What does this mean in very simple words? It practically does not corrode and can last forever . But be careful, this metal has its own personality and can often darken if you do not treat it with care. (If this happens, don't worry! It´s completely reversible.)
To take care of them
- Try to keep your jewelry from coming into direct contact with chemicals such as perfumes, soaps, creams, household cleaning products, etc. For example: if you are going to put on perfume, do it before putting on your jewelry. And if you´re cleaning, take it off.
- Avoid physical activity while wearing your jewelry, as sweating can cause it to darken more quickly. This also prevents the risk of injury, snagging or breakage.
- If you get them wet, dry them well. In normal water there is no problem, but if you are going to bathe in a hot spring, you must take them off beforehand (the sulphur in the water turns them black in seconds).
- When not in use, store them in a dry place and, if possible, separate them from each other to avoid scratches. The Ring Fit bag they came in is perfect for this.
- If you have leather bracelets, moisturize the strap from time to time to keep it soft and flexible. You can use some leather renewing cream, natural shoe polish or a shoe polish of the same color as the leather to enhance its color.
Now then... Why does silver darken?
It is completely normal, natural and expected for your silver jewelry to blacken over time and with use. This process is called sulfidation and occurs when silver comes into contact with sulfur particles in the environment, causing it to react, forming silver sulfide. First the jewelry becomes opaque, then yellowish and finally almost black.
Another important cause, and the hardest to control, is the skin´s pH, which varies from person to person. A more acidic pH accelerates tarnishing, which is why it sometimes happens that two people can have the same piece of jewellery, bought in the same place and with the same use, one of them darkens faster while the other keeps their accessory impeccable.
The good thing is (and that's the beauty of precious metals) that this layer of silver sulfide is completely superficial and with a simple cleaning your jewelry will shine like new again!
To clean them:
🔹 Quick cleaning: Rub your jewelry with a soft, dry flannel or microfiber cloth (you get one for free in your Ring Fit!).
🔹 Deep cleaning: If you need more help, try this homemade method:
- ✔ A small cup
- ✔ A couple of tablespoons of baking soda
- ✔ Hot water
- ✔ A little dish detergent
- ✔ Aluminum foil (optional, but recommended because it speeds up the chemical reaction)
- ✔ A soft toothbrush
- Line the inside of the cup with aluminum foil (if using).
- Place your jewelry inside and add the baking soda.
- Pour in the hot water and let them sit for about 15 minutes.
- Rinse with water and use the toothbrush with a little detergent to clean the smallest corners.
- Dry with a cloth and you're done! Make them shine again.
🚨 Important:
If your jewelry has an oxidized finish , clean it only with a flannel cloth or, at most, with a little water and detergent. Do not use baking soda or a toothbrush.
For leather jewelry, just use a cloth.
